Lavinia Group Summer “Term 5” Rapid Recovery Program

Since March 2020, the Lavinia Group team of 20+ former principals, labsite teachers, and superintendents has been “on the ground” in virtual classrooms. Each day, we help our partner schools ensure that students don’t lose academic ground as a result of the pandemic, and continue to make growth year-over-year.

Leveraging Lavinia Group’s best practices for professional development, instruction, and technology, including LG’s signature methods for Intellectual Preparation and Student Work Study, Lavinia Group will partner with select networks and districts this summer to implement a “Term 5” Rapid Recovery Program. The program, which can be taught virtually or in-person, will ensure that:

The maximum number of students possible begin the year on grade level
Teachers and leaders have the tools to remediate gaps created by COVID-19 school disruptions
Schools have simple but effective data systems in place to monitor student progress on a daily and weekly basis
Schools have the opportunity to participate in Lavinia Group’s proven professional development structures to support and rapidly develop leaders and teachers
Students have access to high-quality, multicultural curriculum this summer

What We Offer

Curriculum: At the heart of our program are the methods and content that Lavinia Group has pioneered and leveraged to help our partner schools across the country transform student learning and improve outcomes. This summer, we will provide 5 weeks of daily lesson plans for rising 1st – rising 9th grade students for the following components:[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.7.7″ text_font=”||||||||” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Insight Humanities™ Novel Study: Grounded in highly-engaging, multicultural literature by award-winning and prolific authors, students will read, analyze, discuss, and write about world-class novels. This work will rapidly develop students’ critical thinking skills, passion for reading, and ability to analyze ANY novel with confidence and precision.
Close Reading for Meaning™: Using genre as an inroad, Lavinia Group’s Close Reading for Meaning method teaches students to use a symphony of strategies to unpack complex texts that are at or above grade level. Through a carefully designed Roadmap of Questions™, Lavinia Group’s curriculum prepares students to attend to both the essential meaning as well as author’s craft. After engaging in a shared experience with their teachers, students are given the opportunity to apply the Close Reading for Meaning method to a new text, honing their ability to tackle ANY text confidently and independently.
Math for Meaning™ – Story Problems: Grounded in the belief that ALL students are mathematicians, Lavinia Group’s Story Problems curriculum and method engages students to develop multiple approaches for solving on and above grade level problems through hands-on learning and rich mathematical discourse. As students persevere through problem solving and share their mathematical reasoning, they develop the confidence and precision necessary to tackle ANY mathematical task independently while building their mastery of grade level standards.

Programming: With Lavinia Group’s Summer “Term 5” Rapid Recovery Program, schools have the autonomy to create their own schedules. We will provide:

Sample daily and weekly schedules
A carefully curated menu of blended learning resources that complement Lavinia Group’s core curriculum

Professional development opportunities with the Lavinia Group team include a 3-day training Institute before the program begins, and professional development for teachers multiple times per week. All professional development will be led directly by the Lavinia Group team, and will be differentiated based on previous experience with Lavinia Group methods.

During the course of the program, participating educators will come together for deep Intellectual Preparation and Student Work Study meetings twice a week. Intellectual Preparation: During Intellectual Preparation meetings, Lavinia Group team members will guide participants through careful study and analysis of the novel, close reading text, or mathematical problem and concepts. They will support teachers to identify potential student misconceptions, and exemplar responses and to engage in practice around key parts of each lesson. Teachers will leave prepared and confident to teach!
Student Work Study Meetings: During Student Work Study meetings, teachers will use Lavinia Group’s Student Work Study protocol to analyze student thinking and mastery of the concept, as well as to identify opportunities for differentiation. Over the course of the summer, teachers will build the skill necessary to do this work independently in their own classrooms once the school year begins.
Weekly Office Hours: The Lavinia Group will be available to teachers and leaders through weekly office hours for additional guidance, coaching, and thought-partnership.
